Lamp posts in Tooting and Earlsfield transformed into art galleries

Look up while out on your local high street and you'll be able to see artworks by 130 local artists hanging from the lampposts.

'Framed' is a new outdoor art project across Wandsworth featuring 133 banners by 120 artists.

You can find banners on lamp posts in Tooting, Earlsfield, Balham, Clapham Junction, Furzedown, Southfields, Wandsworth Town, Roehampton, and Putney.

This was set up by the council's art team after events such as Wandsworth Artists Open House had to be cancelled because of the pandemic.

Wandsworth Art provides an online forum profiling hundreds of exceptional artists, designers, makers, poets, and arts organisations based in the borough.

The Framed project supports local artists by showing their work in public spaces, turning high streets into art galleries and encouraging people to shop locally.

The youngest artist is three-year-old Carlos Gabriel González Guidote, who presents his 'Mr Strawberry' drawing in Tooting.

There is a broad range of artistic disciplines and styles on display including contemporary painting, traditional portraiture, photography to conceptual art, digital drawing, sculpture and illustration.

Artworks have been selected from the artists and makers featured on the Wandsworth Art website, a project launched in 2020 to promote local artists after the pandemic led to the cancellation of all exhibitions and events.

Where to see the artworks:

Balham - Balham High Road, Bedford Hill

Clapham Junction - Battersea Rise, St John's Road, Northcote Road, St John's Hill, Lavender Hill

Earlsfield - Garratt Lane

Furzedown - Mitcham Lane

Putney - Putney High Street

Roehampton - Danebury Avenue, Roehampton Lane, Medfield Street

Southfields - Replingham Road, Wimbledon Park Road

Tooting - Tooting High Street, Upper Tooting Road

Wandsworth Town - West Hill, Wandsworth High Street, Old York Road, Garratt Lane

Wandsworth Council's Cabinet Member for Community Services and Open Spaces, Councillor Steffi Sutters, said: "It is wonderful to walk down our high streets and see local artists' work on display.

"Each year, as part of Wandsworth Artists' Open House, I am amazed by the wealth of artistic talent within the community this year it has been fantastic to be able to transpose that creativity from inside people's homes and studioes into the public realm and give it a wider audience.

"Digital creative activity has contributed so much to many residents' lives during the pandemic but now is the time to move forward, to bring art to our nine high streets in an accessible and fun way."
