Women in labour have been asked to call St George's Hospital before arriving due to the maternity unit being more busy than usual.

The hospital made an announcement yesterday evening (June 21), asking anyone who thinks they are in labour to call 0208 767 4654 for advice before attending.

If the maternity unit is beyond capacity, then St George's may suggest diverting your care to a nearby hospital instead.

Janet Bradley, director of midwifery at the trust, said: "Our maternity services are exceptionally busy at the moment, which is why we are taking proactive steps to manage demand, so ensuring all women giving birth at St George's get the care and treatment they need.

"If we do need to transfer your care to another hospital, your medical records and birth plan will transfer with you, so ensuring you receive continuity of care."

St George's also apologised for any inconveniences caused and ensure those who are pregnant that they will get the care and treatment they require.
