A councillor has described a fly-tip as 'appalling' after discovering it in Tooting.

Labour councillor for Graveney Kemi Akinola came across the rubbish yesterday (August 17) before posting it on her Twitter account, criticising the actions of the littered.

As you can see from the picture, the rubbish was dumped on the corner of Brightwell Crescent.

Wandsworth Council has also responded to the incident, lamenting the fly-tipper for their "callous disregard for their environment".

Akinola, who is also the deputy leader for Labour in Wandsworth, tweeted saying: "This is quite appalling. Recycling bags used for all sorts. @wandbc @wbc_help please collect and I hope you can find the culprit ass I see letters and something relating to @SellincourtPri1 in there #RubbishTweet #Wandsworth".

Despite tweeting about the incident at 5pm, the rubbish still remained on the corner of Brightwell Crescent at 3pm today.

What Wandsworth Council has said

The council has confirmed that it will investigate to see if it can find the perpetrator and echoed the frustrations of Councillor Akinola.

The statement also asked for people who find come across these incidents to report it to its website rather than on Twitter as the account is not as closely monitored during non-working hours.

A Wandsworth Council spokesperson said: "We share the community's frustration that some people living locally have such callous disregard for their environment and for the feelings of their neighbours and behave in this way.

"We will of course investigate to see if there is anything we can use to trace the perpetrator but it has been reported and will be removed imminently.

"We would please ask people to report these issues via our website at https://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/street-care-and-cleaning/fly-tipping/report-fly-tipping/ where it can be properly recorded and appropriate action taken.

"Posting messages on Twitter is not always the most effective of communicating with us as our Twitter feed is not so closely monitored outside normal working hours."
