A witness has explained what they have seen after a man was shot in Tooting.

At 1pm today (September 27), emergency services rushed to Garratt Lane after a man was injured near Fairlight Road with gunshot wounds, as we reported earlier.

Suswati Basu, a local resident, says she could hear the gunshots from her home.

Police have said that they do not believe the injuries are life-threatening, while the ambulance service has said they have taken the man to a major trauma centre.

At the time of writing, there have been no arrests made.

Garratt Lane is currently shut in both directions.

Suswati told Nub News of her experiences.

She said: "Heard three loud bangs which I first assumed were either a car backfiring or shots.

"Next thing I know an ambulance arrived and a police car.

"Several more police cars arrived and cordoned off Fairlight Road.

"Now they appear to be going door to door on Fairlight Road.

"The ambulance and police cars have left but the road is still shut.

"A neighbour down the road claims police have told him they are investigating a shooting. The police have confirmed this statement and the person has been taken to hospital.

"Sniffer dogs are on the scene and they're going door to door."

After posting updates through much of the incident , Suswati has tweeted saying that she is "a bit shaken up" and is going to take a few hours off social media.

Wandsworth Police statement

A spokesperson for Wandsworth Police said: "Officers were called at 12:59 on Mon 27/09 to Garratt Lane SW17.

"A man at the location was suffering from gunshot injuries and has been taken to hospital.

"His condition is not thought life threatening at this time. Enquiries continue and no arrests made."

London Ambulance Service statement

London Ambulance Service (LAS) have confirmed that the injured person has been taken to a major trauma centre.

A LAS spokesperson said: "We were called at 1pm today (27 September) to reports of a person injured on Fairlight Road, SW17.

"We sent an ambulance crew, a clinical team leader, and an incident response officer.

"We treated a person at the scene and took them to a major trauma centre as a priority."

Road closure

The road is currently shut in both directions from the top of Fountain Road to Bridgewater Road. Drivers have been recommended to find an alternative route.

Jambuster, a traffic application, says: "[A217] Garratt Lane (SW17) (All Directions) at the junction of Fountain Road and Broadwater Road - The road is closed due to a police Incident

"Expect delays and use alternative routes."
