A man in Tooting has been shot and rushed to hospital, police have confirmed.

At 1pm today (September 27), police were called to an incident on Garratt Lane where they found a man suffering from gunshot injuries in broad daylight.

A witness claims they heard 'three loud bangs' before an ambulance and a swarm of police cars arrived at the scene.

The incident occurred near The Gym in Tooting and Garratt Lane is now shut off between the junction of Fountain Road and Broadwater Road.

The London Ambulance Service has confirmed that they have treated the person at the scene and have taken them to a major trauma centre as a priority.

No arrests have yet been made.

"A man at the location was suffering from gunshot injuries and has been taken to hospital.

The road is currently shut in both directions from the top of Fountain Road to Bridgewater Road. Drivers have been recommended to find an alternative route.

"Expect delays and use alternative routes."

What a witness has said

Suswati Basu, a local resident, has been tweeting about the incident.

Suswati claims that she heard three bangs which she assumed were either a car backfiring or shots. She also says that the ambulance and police have left but the road is still shut.

The Tooting resident also pictured police knocking on doors on Fairlight Road after the incident.

Suswati has recently tweeted that she is "a bit shaken up" and has taken a few hours off social media as "down time".
