Tooting: Where to get a picture with Marc Bolan plaque today

30th Jul 2021 | Local News

Calling all Marc Bolan fans: here's how you can get a picture with his commemorative plaque in Tooting today.

Between 2 and 2.30pm this afternoon (July 30), Marc Bolan's plaque will be seen outside Tooting Broadway - just opposite from where Wimpy used to be, where Marc used to work.

The plaque has come as a result of fundraising by Summerstown 182 Community History Project .

Marc Bolan, born as Marc Feld, lived in Summerstown during the 1960s after moving to the area as a 13-year-old.

It was there where he learnt poetry and transformed from Marc Feld into Marc Bolan - one of the biggest pop stars of his generation.

Marc Bolan was the lead singer and founder of the group T. Rex.

The plaque will be unveiled on September 18 - exactly 50 years after Get It On was number one in the charts in the UK. It will happen outside Tesco Express in Summerstown, the location of where the Prince of Wales pub once was, where he used to be seen busking during his early stages as a musician.

However, you can get an early sighting of the plaque by heading to Tooting Broadway this afternoon.

Money was raised for the plaque on an online fundraiser set up by Geoff Simmons. You can still donate and the additional funds will be used to promote the event.

There will also be a guided walk in build-up to the event from St Andrews Church in Earlsfield. This will run from 6pm on Monday September 13.

You can find more information, such as how to attend these walks and unveilings, from the Summerstown182 website or Geoff Simmons' personal Twitter page.
