Tooting: Shooting on Garratt Lane - everything we know so far

30th Sep 2021 | Local News

On Monday afternoon a man in Tooting was shot and rushed to hospital on Garratt Lane.

As a result, the road was shut in both directions and ambulance and police crews were quickly on the scene.

A local resident heard three "loud bangs" before the emergency services arrived.

Thankfully, the man's injuries were not "life-threatening". The police confirmed that he was shot in his league and aged in his 30s.

Three days on from the incident and the police are yet to make any arrests and enquiries are ongoing. They are urging anyone with information to call 101 and quote CAD 3512/27EP.

Here is a recap of Monday's events and everything we know so far.

Where did it happen?

The incident occurred on Garratt Lane in Tooting.

Police cars and ambulances could be seen near The Gym and resultingly the road was shut off between the junction of Fountain Road and Broadwater Road.

When did it happen?

Police and the ambulance service were both called at 1pm on Monday (September 27).

While the road was not initially shut off while the ambulance dealt with the injured man, it was within a few hours as forensics came to the area to investigate the shooting. The road was closed until the evening.

Is the man okay?

While there is no update on the extent of the man's injuries, police have confirmed they were not "life-threatening."

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) also said within its statement that the man was taken to a major trauma centre.

Latest police statement

The Met Police confirmed to Tooting Nub News this afternoon that there have been no further updates to their enquiries and that their latest statement remains.

The statement reads: "Police were called at 12:59hrs on Monday, 27 September to reports of a shooting in Garrett Lane, Tooting.

"Officers attended along with London Ambulance Service and found a man in his 30s with a gunshot injury to his leg. He was taken to a south London hospital where his condition was assessed as non-life-threatening.

"Enquiries are ongoing and no arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting CAD 3512/27Sep. To remain anonymous contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

What a witness saw

Suswati Basu, a local resident, says she could hear the gunshots from her home.

Suswati told Nub News of her experiences.

She said: "Heard three loud bangs which I first assumed were either a car backfiring or shots.

"Next thing I know an ambulance arrived and a police car.

"Several more police cars arrived and cordoned off Fairlight Road.

"Now they appear to be going door to door on Fairlight Road.

"The ambulance and police cars have left but the road is still shut.

"A neighbour down the road claims police have told him they are investigating a shooting. The police have confirmed this statement and the person has been taken to hospital.

"Sniffer dogs are on the scene and they're going door to door."

London Ambulance Service comment

A LAS spokesperson said: "We were called at 1pm today (27 September) to reports of a person injured on Fairlight Road, SW17.

"We sent an ambulance crew, a clinical team leader, and an incident response officer.

"We treated a person at the scene and took them to a major trauma centre as a priority."
