Tooting Police Station: 'Absolutely tragic' - MD of company that secures station describes eviction process

The former Tooting Police Station is now secure after a raid was completed this morning (June 18).

The Grade II listed building had been taken over by squatters earlier this week, who had vandalised the site with a series of anti-vaccine and anti-mask messages.

The managing director of the company that carried out the raid described the acts of vandalism as "absolutely tragic".

The building, currently owned by property development company Telereal Trillium, had a High Court 'Writ of possession' order passed yesterday for the building to be repossessed.

Equivo, the company that carried out the possession of the building, left a 'notice of possession' letter on the front of the building this morning, confirming that all squatters had been evacuated.

Additionally, the banners have been removed, and work to clean up both the outside and inside of the building will now be undertaken.

Nub News spoke to Jonathan Chatfield, the managing director of Equivo, who talked us through the process.

He said: "An order for possession was made yesterday in the High Court.

"We executed this today. All occupiers have left the building and no one has been injured. It is now in the process of being cleaned up.

"Our focus was getting my people in and out safely.

"The client did everything they could to get people out of the building.

"It's just absolutely tragic, mindless vandalism.

"I personally don't understand it. I can understand needing somewhere to live, but trashing a beautiful property? Just appalling."

The former police station - which closed in October 2020 - is due to be turned into flats.
