Tooting MP slams world leaders for 'turning back' on Afghanistan

Tooting's MP has criticised world leaders for 'washing their hands of Afghanistan'.

Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, a Labour MP who has long championed women's rights, tweeted in regards to the current situation in Afghanistan, saying it would be catastrophic for females who have lived lives incompatible with Taliban beliefs for two decades.

After nearly two decades of war, the world was shocked this week by horrifying scenes of Afghans swarming the tarmac of Kabul's airport, as many attempted to escape a country that has now been overrun by the Taliban.

U.S. defence officials expected Kabul to fall in 90 days - it took less than 10.

With the U.S. withdrawing its operation, the Taliban has been gaining more territory on a daily basis. They have now effectively taken over the country and will enforce a version of Islamic Law.

Allin-Khan called the situation "shameful".

She said: "World leaders washing their hands of Afghanistan, is shameful.

"There are women and girls who have led lives incompatible with Taliban beliefs for two decades - to turn our back on them now would be a catastrophe."
