Tooting: Labour win by-election as Tories, accused of electioneering, lose by ONE vote

By Tommy Joyce 27th Nov 2021

Labour have won the Bedford ward by-election, beating the Conservatives by a remarkable one vote.

Sheila Boswell will be the councillor that replaces Hannah Stanislaus in the Bedford ward, however, it literally couldn't have been any closer with Tom Mytton just one vote behind.

Tom Mytton and the Tories were accused of 'blatant electioneering' a few weeks ago as the candidate released information regarding financing to Tooting Lido and Tooting Bec Athletics Track prior to Wandsworth Council.

A by-election for the same ward took place in May, and the Tories managed to cut a majority of 936 to just one.

The overall turnout for the by-election had dropped substantially. During the May 2021 by-election, the turnout was 51.4 per cent, however, this election saw a turnout of just 21.4 per cent (2252 people).

The by-election took place after Hannah Stanislaus resigned from Labour back in August due to claims of bullying and subsequently stood down from her role as an Independent councillor.

The results are as follows:

Sheila Boswell, Labour Party - 906

Thomas Mytton, Conservative Party - 905

Roy Vickery, The Green Party - 306

Paul Tibbles, Liberal Democrats - 135 Have a story in Tooting you'd like to share? Get in touch! Email [email protected], call 07557513104 or tweet @TommyJJourno [I] [I] Find all the latest news from Tooting on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
