Tooting Bec Athletics Track and Tooting Lido could be set for substantial improvements, according to a Conservative campaigner.

Tom Mytton is running in the Bedford ward by-election following Hannah Stanislaus's resignation and has announced on Twitter that they have secured a commitment from the council to improve these facilities.

According to his announcement, over £2.5million will be spent on the facilities, on top of the £867,000 that has already been invested into improving Tooting Lido's south pump room.

This alleged investment will include a new surface for Tooting Bec Athletics Track, costing £527,000 and to be completed by summer 2022. While it is not confirmed, the statement says that this is what the council "is proposing" to do.

Mytton says the council "have a commitment to" investing over £2million into Tooting Lido, which is said to "secure the Lido's world-class status".

Within the statement, Mytton said: "I hope the news of these two very substantial investments will be welcomed in the Bedford ward and beyond by those of us who value both of these nationally renowned public amenities in our community.

"I am sure you will appreciate the substantial financial investment into our local area, which has been made possible by the careful management of our public finances."

Wandsworth Council has refused to confirm the information released by Mytton.

A number of people have been campaigning to improve the athletics track, including Tooting MP Dr Rosena Allin-Khan and Herne Hill Harriers, the athletics club that uses the facility.

The Bedford ward by-election takes place on November 25, where Tom Mytton will compete with Sheila Boswell (Labour), Paul Tibbles (Liberal Democrats) and Roy Vickery (Green Party).
