This week for our Event of the Week, we have Marginalia's performance of Romeo & Juliet, called 'A Rose by Another Name'.
The event is happening at St Thomas' Balham onFriday August 13 from 7.30pm.
What you need to know about the event
A theatre-opera fusion suitable for all ages and a great introduction to opera for anyone.
Love and Romeo have been a pretty dysfunctional team for a long time. Rosaline… that didn't go so well. Maybe Juliet will be the one, if Love could only exercise some self-control and rein in her penchant for chaos. But desire and egotism are dangerous bedfellows: Juliet struggles desperately against powerful currents of coercion and manipulation. A noble passion to heal age-old rifts? Perhaps not.
Marginalia irreverently combines Shakespeare's timeless words with intoxicating melodies from Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi. Newly devised and fully staged for two singers and an actor, bringing you star-crossed lovers as never before.
What is Marginalia
[I] Marginalia is an interdisciplinary performance collective bringing cutting-edge academic research to life in performance. We want to tell stories that have remained hidden on the margins of history and introduce original ideas to new audiences. We also shine new light on more familiar material, re-energising well-known repertoire by exploring it from different perspectives.
With backgrounds in both research and performance, we believe in the importance of performance both as a research tool and in presenting the products of research to wider audiences. We use the power of research to unlock possibilities for original and engaging performance events.
As well as realising the potential of our own academic work, we also collaborate with other scholars, supporting their lectures and public events with performance elements, and working with them to craft fully fledged musical programmes.
