Tooting Community Kitchen feeds truckers stuck on M20
Tooting Community Kitchen provided food packs, meals and water to stranded truckers on the M20 yesterday.
It was estimated that more than 600 trucks were stuck on the M20 motorway as part of a government operation to queue the traffic travelling towards Europe following the closure of France's border.
Lorry drivers are only being allowed to leave the country if they provide a negative coronavirus test.
The brilliant people at Tooting Community Kitchen used their initiative and platform to appeal for donations to help the truckers.
Generosity from the community and the kitchen's volunteers meant that the truckers were able to be fed and provided for.
The team also partnered with 'SWAN London' for the campaign who specialise in similar operations around the capital.
A spokesperson for SWAN said: "The response to the appeal absolutely exceeded expectations. The community really came together.
"The packs and water that was leftover was then distributed to refugees. So all in all, there were lots of happy people last night."
Tooting Community Kitchen's work
For the past two years, Tooting Community Kitchen has been serving fresh food and refreshments to the most vulnerable twice a week.
The beginning of December saw the Kitchen unveil their new food bank on 102 Upper Tooting Rd.
The food bank operates much like the weekly stalls, running completely on a volunteer not-for-profit basis.
The bank is open every Friday from 11am - 12:30pm for people in need of food items.
You can visit Tooting Community Kitchen's stall outside Tooting Market on Wednesday and Saturday evenings.
