Users of Tooting Common have been politely asked to make sure they clean up after themselves after a dog fell ill.

After a chocolate cake had been left on the common, a dog ended up eating it and had to be treated by an emergency vet.

The Friends of Tooting Common (FOTC), a group of local residents whose mission is to ensure that the common is a better place for people, plants and wildlife, discussed it on its Facebook group.

Within the group, the chair of FOTC, Petter Rammell, said: "We (FOTC) have heard of a recent case where a dog ate some left-over chocolate cake that had been left behind some trees on the Common, and was then seriously ill, needing treatment by an emergency vet.

"Chocolate can be very dangerous for a dog.

"This does of course underline that it is important, for this and other reasons, that people should not leave discarded food - of any sort - out on the common."
