This Tooting resident is bringing back the Clap for Our Carers campaign

By The Editor 4th Jan 2021

A Tooting resident has made it his mission to bring back the Clap for Our Carers celebrations this week.

Sean Donahoe of Totterdown Fields lives close to St George's Hospital and has been seeing the pressure the staff are under.

"Living near a hospital provides a modest perspective of what may be happening inside," Sean told Nub News.

"The emergency sirens and helipad usage do not go unnoticed, as should the continuing staff appreciation go unheard."

First starting in March, the Clap for Our Carers campaign saw thousands of people come out of their homes across the country to clap in appreciation of the NHS.

Sean said: "I'd like to thank the NHS staff again for their dedication and hard work over the holiday time period."

Sean will be clapping for the NHS this Thursday (7 Jan) at 20:00.

St George's Hospital under strain

A New Year's Day interview with an intensive care doctor from St George's Hospital revealed staff were being 'strained to point of exhaustion'.

Dr Rafik Bedair described the immense pressure his ward is under and the worry of not being able to meet the growing demand.

Dr Bedair said: "The worry remains that we will continue to have pressures, we will try to respond to them, but we will always be concerned that we will come to a point where we won't be able to respond to the full demand."

Recent UK COVID-19 statistics
