A property company has acquired the former Tooting Police Station and Section House from the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) for £8.25M.

The 0.85-acre, Mitcham Road site became available at the end of 2020 following the closure of Tooting Police Station in October as part of the Metropolitan Police's Estate Transformation programme.

It comprises two connected buildings, the former Police Station which was constructed in 1939 and Section House which was added shortly afterwards.

Both buildings are locally listed and were designed by the Metropolitan Police surveyor and architect Gilbert MacKenzie Trench, who is best known as the designer of the iconic blue Police Box famously and forever associated with the Doctor Who Tardis.

Telereal Trillium says this provides potential for the residential-led re-use of the property.

The existing accommodation extends to approximately 71,000 sq. ft over lower ground, ground and four upper floors.

Telereal Trillium says they will 'sensitively' modernise and refurbish the building - while keeping the Art Deco façade and entrance, balconies and stone banding.

Given its close proximity to excellent transport links at Tooting train station, as well as Tooting Broadway and Tooting Bec underground stations, Telereal Trillium says new homes will make a welcome addition to an established residential area.

Commenting on the acquisition, Duncan Brisbane, Development Director at Telereal Trillium, said:

"This is an exciting opportunity for us to deliver a landmark scheme in the heart of one of south London's most popular areas. Traditionally, Telereal Trillium has concentrated on development opportunities within our own portfolio.

"However, we are increasingly keen to identify new sites such as this, where our development team can apply its substantial experience and expertise to add value and bring vacant buildings back into long-term use."
