Mitcham: Locals urged to shut windows as black smog streams across area

Locals have been told to keep their windows shut due to a fire at the Mitcham Gas Holder Station.

The disused gas holder had set alight, causing the police and fire brigade to arrive at the scene.

A cordon has been put in place on Western Road while the situation is dealt with.

The incident was first reported at 8.53am this morning (July 21) and smoke still continues to flow from the gas holder (as of 12pm).

Merton Police, London Fire Brigade and Merton Council have all reminded people who live around the area to keep their windows and doors shut as there is still a lot of smoke.

People have also been told to avoid the area.

What the fire brigade has said

London Fire Brigade released a statement this morning, saying that fire crews from Mitcham, Wimbledon and Tooting are all at the scene.

A spokesperson said: "Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters are at the scene of a fire at disused gas holder in Western Road, Mitcham.

"A small amount of solid residue is alight.

"The fire is creating a lot smoke and people are being advised to avoid the area and keep all windows and doors shut.

"A 25 metre cordon is in place. Crews are expected to remain on the scene for some time.

"The Brigade was called at 0853. Fire crews from Mitcham, Wimbledon and Tooting stations are at the scene.

"The cause of the blaze is not known at this time."

What Merton Police has said

Merton Police are still on the scene.

A spokesperson said: "We are currently on scene with the London Fire Brigade on Bond Road, Mitcham, opposite Asda. This is due to black smoke emanating from an old gas reserve tank at the location.

"Please keep all windows and doors shut to protect yourself from fume or smoke inhalation."

What Merton Council has said

Merton Council has asked local people to avoid the area.

A spokesperson said: "A cordon is in place in Western Road Mitcham while London Fire puts out this fire.

"Please avoid the area.

"Residents are advised to close doors and windows as there is a lot of smoke"
