On Saturday December 18, Green Santa and his elves arrived in force for Extinction Rebellion's Christmas event outside Sainsbury's in Balham.

The overall message was that we must rein in consumption for the sake of our planet.

'We have only one Earth,' said the leaflet that was handed out. 'It is estimated that if everyone in the world lived an average UK lifestyle, we'd need 2.7 Earths to sustain us.'

The leaflet also contained some shocking facts about our consumption at Christmas – for example, every year around 500 tonnes of Christmas lights are thrown away and £42 million of unwanted Christmas presents end up in landfill – and some suggestions for how we can shop more responsibly and still have a great time.

The message was reinforced by the presence of our lifesize David Attenborough bearing the message 'David says: "Don't waste. Don't waste anything.

Passersby took every last leaflet and many wrote messages on our giant Christmas card to the planet.

A banner proclaimed 'Another World Is Possible'. This would be a better, juster world, where we share the world's limited resources fairly and everyone has enough to live a good life.
