Dr Rosena Allin-Khan this morning appeared on Sky News to discuss student mental health during the pandemic.

With most students now across the country in their halls of residence and living under coronavirus restrictions - problems with mental health have reportedly increased.

The Centre for Mental Health today said that up to 8.5million adults and 1.5million children will need support for mental health difficulties as a result of the pandemic.

Speaking to Kay Burley this morning, Dr Rosena said: "We have students in accommodation around the country who are living under restrictions, living with people they have never met.

"Feeling as though they were about to start their new life and their education journey on the back of the exams fiasco.

"Told that they would be safe to go and do so who are now finding themselves really strained."

Dr Rosena said she would be 'extremely concerned' as a parent if her children were currently at University.

"I would want to bring them home, I really would," she said.

Dr Rosena has called for a government system to support young people's mental health and for Universities to be 'perfectly placed' to know how to support their students.

Dr Rosena said: "We are asking the government to engage with them - with student unions, with local NHS and mental health trusts, to get this right for our students."
