Broadway Market: Tooting eateries describe how 10pm curfew has affected their business
Broadway Market in Tooting is the home of many restaurants which have been affected by the change in government guidelines throughout the pandemic.
The recent 'rule of six' and 10pm curfew has meant that some establishments have lost a large chunk of their revenue.
Much of Broadway Market is heavily dependent on night time dining and operate shorter opening times.
We spoke to some of the establishments to see how they are coping with the new rules.
Bordelaise
Bordelaise previously told Nub News that they were expecting a 30% decrease in sales when the new curfew arrived.
Bordelaise co-owner Aleix Morales has now said that while the curfew hasn't hit the business as hard as he expected, the restaurant is still losing around 25% of their usual sales.
"People are definitely spending more money but we are still losing a large portion of our customer base," Aleix told Nub News.
"I think people are treating their meal as if it could be their last for a while. No one knows what is going to happen tomorrow."
Bordelaise has had to constantly adapt to the changing rules - they recently took down a new £500 table to abide by the 'rule of six'.
Barra 10
Owner Daniel Cives told Nub News that they have been limited to one round of seating due to their late opening time.
The restaurant says they would usually be able to have three rounds of tables in a night before the curfew.
Candelaria
The Latin Tapas Bar has told Nub News that they are 'trying to survive'.
Normally the bar would run a happy hour deal until 10pm. They say this would then encourage customers to stay in later and carry on spending money.
Now the curfew has been shortened, the bar has found it hard to find a balance between offering the deal and full price.
Sea Garden and Grill
Owner Jimmy has told Nub News that while the curfew hasn't hugely damaged his business, he is still losing a lot of tables that would usually eat later.
He is, however, finding that customers are spending more which is helping to balance out the loss.
Wok & Go
Chinese takeaway and restaurant, Wok & Go, has been largely unaffected by the curfew due to its Deliveroo and Just Eat sales.
Owner Rafael Groczak says he doesn't understand how he can carry on selling through delivery options after ten but can't serve outside the shop with limited contact.
