'Incredible' community response helps set return date for Food Bus

A local charity has praised the community response since its Food Bus was defaced over the weekend.

The Food Bus had been unusable after orange and black spray paint had covered all four sides of the vehicle.

However, Wandsworth Council managed to arrange for the bus to be cleaned for free - and now it can be used again.

The bus will be back on the road starting from next week.

The Food Bus is run by Be Enriched , a local charity founded by Kemi Akinola, and brings affordable fresh food to underserved areas in Wandsworth at a fraction of its usual price. The bus has a cafe and shop onboard and stops at different locations throughout the week around south west London, but is kept in Tooting.

Now the charity is looking to move its static location so that the same does not happen again.

Ruby, a worker for Be Enriched, spoke to Nub News about the response to the vandalism.

She said: "The bus got cleaned this morning, the council organised that for us and that was done for free. We reached out to them for that.

"The community's response was incredible, very touching.

"We all felt so disheartened over the weekend, but many people reached out giving us contacts they thought might be helpful, we had someone set up a donation page for us and we had several donations made to our Global Giving page as well."

"The bus will be out again next week, we are taking this week to reorganise and put all our efforts into finding a safe space we can keep the bus.

"We do not yet have a location confirmed but we have several avenues we are exploring currently.

"If people want to help further, donations will always be welcome to support the food bus, and if people would share any info we put out about what we are up to over the coming months we would greatly appreciate it so we can continue to support the community."
