Tooting Common Green Flag ceremony announced
The details for Tooting Common's Green Flag Award ceremony have been announced.
After Tooting Common was given Green Flag status around a year ago, it was recently voted that the new flag will be positioned by the water fountain on Dr Johnson Avenue and Tooting Bec Roads.
Now it has been announced that the Green Flag will be hoisted on the flagpole on November 4.
The Green Flag rewards good practice and looks at eight key criteria including community involvement, environmental management and how healthy, safe and secure the facilities, equipment and activities are. The judges agreed that Tooting Commons is at the heart of Tooting's community.
Councillor Steffi Sutters will raise the flag for the first time to mark this achievement.
Commenting on the achievement, Sutters, cabinet member for community service and open spaces at Wandsworth Council said: "I am delighted that Tooting Commons has been recognised in this way. I would like to thank the Friends of Tooting Common, TCMAC and volunteers who work tirelessly alongside all of us at the council, Enable Leisure which manages the parks on our behalf and Idverde and Continental Landscapes which maintain all our green spaces".
Wandsworth boasts the highest number of council-owned parks and open spaces in inner London.
Oli Griffiths, chair of Tooting Commons Management Advisory Committee (TCMAC), said: "Now it's been confirmed that Tooting Commons is one of the open best open spaces in London – something that we 'Tootingites' have known for a long time! And more importantly, something that we must protect for future generations."
