Wandsworth Council's leader has called for the government to rethink Tier 2 lockdown restrictions in London.

In a letter to Business Secretary Alok Sharma, Cllr Govindia states:

"Pubs are a huge part of the cultural make up of my borough, as it is across the country. In Wandsworth, hundreds of local jobs depend on these pubs remaining open."

TOOTING and the rest of LONDON will be in Tier 2 restrictions once lockdown is lifted on December 2nd.

The news was due to be announced by Health Secretary Matt Hancock in Parliament this morning, but news came via a Government website practically minutes before the statement.

Read what Tier 2 means for hospitality in Tooting here.

The new tier system, unveiled by the PM earlier this week, features changes to each tier following analysis of how well the former measures worked pre-lockdown.

The new rules will come into effect when the current national lockdown ends at midnight on Wednesday, 2 December.

At this time, non-essential shops, as well as gyms, hairdressers and beauty salons in in all tiers can re-open. Places of worship will be open and weddings can resume, operating within local restrictions.

The new Tier Two rules are as follows:

• Hospitality businesses can remain open until 11pm with last orders at 10pm, but only those businesses which also serve substantial meals will be allowed to open.

• Mixing of households, unless in support bubbles, will not be allowed indoors. The 'rule of six' will apply outdoors.

• Spectator sports can resume with social distancing and limited numbers. With Tier Two restrictions there will be a maximum crowd outdoors of up to 50 per cent of the occupancy for the stadium up to a maximum 2,000 people. There is a limit of 1,000 people indoors.

• Indoor entertainment venues such as bowling alleys, casinos and cinemas must remain closed in this tier.

What are support bubbles?

Support bubbles where a single-person household joins with another household of any size are also being allowed across all tiers.

A person with a child under one counts as a single-person household for support bubble purposes, as does a person with a child under five who needs continuous care, such as those with disabilities.

This also applies to single adult carers of a person with, for example, dementia, where they would also be eligible to form a support bubble with another household.

The Prime Minister has revealed the next steps in the government fight against the COVID-19.

Speaking in parliament today, Boris Johnson revealed the new measures.

They come as the current national lockdown ends on December 2nd.

Mr Johnson said: "We can see route out of the pandemic for the first time.

"By the Spring the scientific advances should make a COVID lockdown redundant.

"National restrictions will end on December 2nd.

"People will be able to meet other in outdoor spaces subject to rule of six.

"Shops and gyms can also now reopen.

"We will return to a regional tier approached."

Details of the Tiers

In Tier Two alcohol must be served as part of a substantial meal.

In Tier Three hospitality will be takeaway only.

The 10pm closing time will now signal 'last orders' time with 11pm replacing it as the new closing time.

Events can now be attended by a limited number of people indoor and outside.

On Thursday we will find out what tier Tooting and the rest of the borough will be in.

More regions are expected to be temporarily in the higher tiers.

What will the Christmas Regulations look like?

The Prime Minister was keen to emphasise that Christmas will not be normal this year.

The whole of the UK will have a few day period over Christmas with relaxed restrictions.

The details of this are not yet confirmed.

Rapid Testing and vaccines

Mr Johnson also emphasises the importance of rapid testing.

A new testing programme will be launched in Tier Three areas in an effort to reduce the rates of coronavirus.

Contacts of people with symptoms will be tested everyday for a week and if negative will not need to isolate for an extra week.

A vaccine will be rolled out when approved.
