Oat-rageous! Residents speak out about increase in rats on Tooting Common
Tooting Common goers have spoken out about the rat 'infestation' being seen around the lake and shrubbery.
The debate started on social media when a resident posted about seeing fifty rats in a one hour walk through the common.
The post went on to explain that they found a pile of dropped oats near the lake - where the rats were congregating.
Not all residents agree with the oat-rage with some saying the increase in rats is a good thing.
One resident said: "This whole post reeks of speciesism to me.
"These animals have the same right to be there as we do. It's all very well complaining about the population of rats increasing but think about how much more litter (including crisp packs, fast food containers etc) have been left on the common by thoughtless litter louts.
"Of course animals trying to survive will take advantage!"
Another resident said: "Who cares. Let them be. I see 50 squirrels an hour on the common too but no one complains about them."
Some people have asked Tooting Common goers to stop feeding the animals.
"As with most animals feeding them helps the population growing," said one resident.
"Foxes would eat them but there is so much better-tasting food around they have no need to chase rats."
Southwark Council actively encourages the feeding of oats to the birds and deters residents from tossing bread.
