The athletics club that occupies Tooting Bec Athletics Track has provided an update to its members, saying that a recent announcement about the future of the track is "potentially a very exciting step forward".

On Monday (November 15), Conservative campaigner Tom Mytton announced on his personal Twitter account that there had been proposals to invest over £500,000 into a new athletics track, as well as over £2m to be put into Tooting Lido.

A statement from the athletics club has confirmed that a capital bid had been submitted for consideration by the council.

While Wandsworth Council refused to confirm that the proposed investments would be going ahead, Herne Hill Harriers responded to the news by updating their members.

The statement reveals that the bid will be considered at the Community Services and Open Spaces Overview and Scrutiny Committee on 25th November.

Keith Newton, the former president of Herne Hill Harriers, said: "Members may have seen the tweet from a Candidate for the Bedford Ward, Tom Mytton.

"It conveys a very positive message regarding Wandsworth Council's commitment to the resurfacing of Tooting Bec Track.

"As advised in previous communications to members, a capital bid has been submitted for consideration by the Council.

"I have been informed that the bid has strong support and will be considered at the Community Services and Open Spaces Overview and Scrutiny Committee on 25th November, and papers are due to be circulated to members this week.

"This is potentially a very exciting step forward in the much needed resurfacing campaign.

"We will keep members updated on developments."

Mytton says the council have proposed £527,000 to be invested into the new track, which would be finished by summer in 2022.

He said: "I hope the news of these two very substantial investments will be welcomed in the Bedford ward and beyond by those of us who value both of these nationally renowned public amenities in our community.

"I am sure you will appreciate the substantial financial investment into our local area, which has been made possible by the careful management of our public finances."

The 35-year-old track had lost its competition license and is already beyond its expected useful life. There has been lots of campaigning to get the track resurfaced, including from MP Dr Rosena Allin-Khan.
