PCR COVID testing sites that popped up across South London two weeks ago ran their final day yesterday (26 April).
Tooting residents over the age of 11 had their last chance to get a test from the site outside of Broadway Underground Station.
With the distribution of PCR tests to multiple pharmacies and schools, as well as the pop-up test sites; Wandsworth Council has been able to help with the distribution of over 183,000 tests by working with the Department for Health and NHS Test & Trace.
A spokesperson for the council said:
"They are hugely grateful to the people of Wandsworth for supporting this surge testing effort."
Public Health Regional Director for London, Prof. Kevin Fenton took to Twitter to urge residents to get a quick test whilst they are available:
"Enhanced testing is important as it helps us to ensure that the controls we have put in place are working".
The pop-up sites are part of the surge testing efforts that aim to combat an increase in South-African variant cases across South London:
"As variants emerge in the community, it is important we do everything to monitor and limit their spread."
With less than 10 patients currently in care at St George's Hospital, the virus seems certainly under control in Tooting.
The level of engagement with the surge testing certainly demonstrates the will of local residents to fight the virus.
