A Tooting pub manager has defended his establishment selling takeaway alcohol to the community after online complaints.

Complaints from residents on social media said that the sale of takeaway alcohol from The Rose and Crown pub was causing people to gather on nearby streets and increasing litter in Tooting Common.

Many residents defended the pub, however, stating that the sale of takeaway alcohol was legal and that the pub was just trying to survive during tough times.

Duane Betts, manager of The Rose and Crown, responded to the complaints stating:

"I promise you that all the staff take their responsibilities to the community and customers very seriously.

"The drink and food orders are taken electronically in advance using the Rose and Crown's Instagram page, Deliveroo and Click and Collect.

"The person at the door is asking for order clarification. Plastic cups have lids to them. The beer is sold in takeaway cartons.

"I and my staff are constantly outside asking people to respect the community and not drink near the premises. We cannot police the surrounding area.

"I close the pub early as not to cause any disturbance to the locals."

One resident responded saying: "I'm all for supporting you Duane, but if you live close by, the noise of people drinking outside the pub is noticeable.

"Perhaps you can take in the bench and display warnings that drinking outside of the pub is not encouraged and to have some respect for the local houses close by."

Duane also added that he and his staff constantly check for litter before and after the pub opens.

"I can't help cups that have been left by people after that, nor the ones that fall out of the bin. Before we open and when we close, you'll see me cleaning up," Duane said.
