The ceremony for Tooting Common's Green Flag award will be taking place later this afternoon - here's all you need to know before the event start.

Tooting Common was awarded Green Flag status last year, meaning the space had been recognised for its high quality and high standard of maintenance.

As a result of the award, a big green flag will be hoisted up onto the new pole on Tooting Common.

What time will it happen?

The Green Flag will be hoisted up at 3.30pm on Thursday, November 4.

Where will it be placed?

The Tooting Commons Management Advisory Committee (TCMAC) put forward a vote to decide where Tooting residents would like the flag to go on the Common.

Nearly 400 people had their say and they decided that it will fly proudly by the water fountain on Dr Johnson Avenue and Tooting Bec Roads.

Other options were by the cafe near Bedford Hill and Hillbury Road or by the ecology pond at the junction of Elmbourne Road and Tooting Bec Roads.

What is the Green Flag award?

The Green Flag Award scheme recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

What will it look like?

The flag will be the same as the picture within the story.

The details for Tooting Common's Green Flag Award ceremony have been announced.

Responses to the award

Steffi Sutters, cabinet member for community service and open spaces at Wandsworth Council, said: "I am delighted that Tooting Commons has been recognised in this way.

"I would like to thank the Friends of Tooting Common, TCMAC and volunteers who work tirelessly alongside all of us at the council, Enable Leisure which manages the parks on our behalf and Idverde and Continental Landscapes which maintain all our green spaces".

Oli Griffiths, Tooting Commons Management Advisory Committee (TCMAC) chairman said: "Being awarded a green flag is something we can be proud of. And the users of the common selecting the site for the flag pole is wonderful".
