Tooting: Case of Omicron variant detected in Wandsworth

By Tommy Joyce 1st Dec 2021

A case of the Omicron variant has been detected within Wandsworth.

Wandsworth Council confirmed the new case earlier as authorities seek to control the latest strain of the virus from taking hold.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has said that there have been two new cases in England, both of which were reported in London, with the other being found in Camden. Neither are said to have links to each other, but both have travel links to South Africa, as per Sky News.

The total of confirmed cases in the UK is now at 11.

The UK Health Security Agency is leading the ongoing investigation into a confirmed Omicron variant case in Wandsworth and the council are working closely with them to ensure that all appropriate actions to identify close contacts and arrange testing are completed.

Wandsworth's director of public health Shannon Katiyo said: "I want to reassure people in Wandsworth that we have good measures in place for dealing with variants and these are working well.

"The Council will continue to do everything we can to keep residents safe and encourage them to maintain good hand hygiene, wear face coverings when required, get tested, and get vaccinated."

The council has reminded its constituents that there are things we can all do to keep each other safe, such as wearing face-coverings on public transport, shops and in crowded settings.

If you have symptoms, no matter how mild, the council has asked for people to get a PCR test immediately.
