Tooting: 'More bees, more wildlife' - What new grass cuts will do for the common

More bees and wildlife are to be expected on Tooting Common in the coming years thanks to new scheduled grass cuts.
Enable Parks and Wandsworth Council have recently announced that certain areas of the common will be getting cut in the summer and autumn months.
Some areas of the long grassland have been identified as being high in nutrients. This means that there are a few species and numbers of wildflowers and there is strong growth of coarse grasses. The wildflower diversity of these areas can be improved by a method that includes cutting and removing the grass off-site. This lowers the level of nutrients in the soil, thus allowing the coarse grasses to grow less and giving the wildflowers the opportunity to come through.
The Butterfly Conservation, a charity devoted to saving butterflies, have backed the work.
Enable will undertake two cuts and collects of the grasslands areas (all of which are pink in the photo).
Tom Mytton, Conservative campaigner in the Bedford ward, backs the plans and also shed some light on what they will mean for the area.
He said: "I'm really happy that the council and Enable have gone down the route of trying to encourage more long-term wildlife.
"It has put the foundations in place for more bees, more wildlife, and this helps with the biodiversity of the green areas we often go to.
"More people are switched on to how much this can impact the local environment so it's fantastic the council are supporting it."
The first cut will be mid-summer and the second will be in autumn.
