A popular tapas bar in Tooting has won an award from a popular wine magazine.
The Tapas Room, located at Unit 3 in Broadway Market, picked up the award for being the Spain Specialist Retailer of the Year in the Decanter Retailer Awards 2021.
Decanter, an internationally renowned wine magazine, announced The Tapas Room as a winner earlier this month - an achievement which the owner Paul says means "a great deal".
As a result of the award, The Tapas Room will be running a special menu this month, featuring some award-winning wines.
The Tapas Room has a range of specialist Spanish and Basque Wines, Sherry, Cava and Vermouth, as well as many other craft beers. They also boast a delicious food menu, including refined tapas, charcuterie and cheese.
Within the announcement, Decanter described The Tapas Room as a 'lip-smacking invitation to experiment.'
It read: "The Tapas Room's impressive growth in a challenging year, opening three more venues, 'proves it's not all doom and gloom out there', said one judge.
"A constantly rotating, decidedly eclectic all-Spanish list is a lip-smacking invitation to experiment."
Paul Belcher, the owner and chef, was delighted with the award.
He said: "Winning the award for Best Spanish Retailer in a national competition such as this is a really huge achievement for us.
"Comparatively we are a small fish in a big pond and we are only as good as our staff, suppliers and customers! So it means a great deal to be recognised by such a respected publication as Decanter."
From their evolving range of Spanish wines, the retailer has selected six Decanter World Wine Awards 2021 medal-winning wines to showcase this October, selling them by the glass, bottle or to take away.
The special wine menu
The following wines will all be available during this month at The Tapas Room.
The descriptions have been taken from the Decanter website.
Lustau Península Palo Cortado, Sherry, Spain NV
Dry, nutty style, with iodine, toast and peanut brittle characters. Light body, long finish and some elegance make for an appealing wine.
Sumarroca, Ecologic Reserva Brut, Cava, Spain 2018
Very elegant ripe yellow fruit on the nose leading to a complex palate with some nutty hints and a long finish. Well executed.
Hiruzta, Txakolina, Txacolí de Getaria, Spain 2020
Bright lemon peel and grapefruit aromas with some underlying tropical fruits. Light prickle on the palate with mid-palate weight and texture; deftly poised with palate-whetting acidity. Long, zesty, elegant, crunchy and fine-boned, this has delightful charm. Shellfish anyone?
Luis Cañas, Crianza, Rioja, Spain 2017
Blackberry and sweet spice nose, red cherry, herbal and spicy flavours. Quite weighty with ripe tannin and a decent finish.
Descendientes de J. Palacios, Pétalos, Bierzo, Spain 2019
Dark fruit nose, woody tannins, dried leaf and cassis flavours. Oak is well integrated; long, chiseled finish. Will age well. Very classy.
Cillar de Silos, Crianza, Ribera del Duero, Spain 2018
Quite refined nose earthy and red fruit bouquet. Medium weight and concentration on the palate. Simple and straightforward.
