Installation of Tooting High Street to Wimbledon Road cycling infrastructure to commence
Highways engineers will next week begin installing the next phase of cycle-friendly infrastructure in Garratt Lane.
It has been announced that engineers will begin installing the next phase of cycle-friendly infrastructure in Garratt Lane.
The works are designed to create safer space for cyclists on the stretch of Garratt Lane between Tooting High Street and Wimbledon Road.
These interim works are designed to create safer space for cyclists on the stretch of Garratt Lane between Tooting High Street and Wimbledon Road.
The works are being completed under an experimental traffic order which means they can be easily amended once they've come into effect.
The measures are being introduced ahead of a bigger list currently drawn up to ensure greater safety for cyclists and pedestrians in Garratt Lane.
The road is an important cycling corridor that is used by many residents every day.
The works will see road space for cyclists protected and segregated in some places, while bus lanes will also be used to provide safer space for cyclists.
Parking will be deterred along this route through the use of double yellow lines.
Two traffic islands will also be constructed at the bend near Garratt Terrace to help reduce vehicle speeds in both directions.
Transport spokesman Cllr John Locker said: "We know that Garratt Lane is a busy and popular route with cyclists so our aim here is to provide them with upgraded cycle lane infrastructure to improve their safety.
"We are doing that initially on an experimental trial basis while we draw up more comprehensive permanent measures.
"We hope the action we're taking here will help persuade people to make the switch from four wheels to two."
