Get rid of your bulky rubbish for free in Tooting on Saturday with Mega Skip Day

Residents in Wandsworth have the chance to get rid of their excess bulky rubbish for free on Saturday.

Usually, residents have to pay a fee to dispose of bulky waste such as a sofa or a mattress, however, on Saturday (October 16) there will be five 'mega skips' across the borough, where residents can get rid of up to six items per household.

In Tooting, this mega skip will be on Church Lane. It will be located at the car park at the bottom of the road (near Mitcham Lane).

Black bags can also be brought to the skip. Each bag will count as one item, as would a sofa or mattress etc.

A high demand is expected on the day, therefore the council will work on a first come first served basis.

The mega skip will be available to use from 9am until midday, so make sure you're down nice and early to ensure you can get rid of the waste.

The skips have all been placed in areas that have had a high level of illegal fly-tipping in recent years.

The council will be collating figures of fly-tipping prior to the event to try and judge the effectiveness of the day.

Councillor Steffi Sutters, council spokesperson for the environment said: "This is a great opportunity for people to dispose of their unwanted household items for free.

"We spend more than £4 million a year on dealing with the blight of fly-tipping and picking litter off our streets so anything we can do to reduce this problem is a positive step forward."

"Fly-tipping and littering is environmental vandalism that can ruin people's communities.

"They not only create eyesores but are an unacceptable nuisance to public health that pollutes an area and attracts vermin."

Wandsworth has reminded residents that the skips are for household waste only, not business waste and that they can bring anything with the following exceptions:

  • No hazardous objects or dangerous materials: such as sharp objects, needles, dangerous chemicals, plasterboard, flammable liquids and asbestos.
  • No bricks, paint, concrete, cement or fridges
