Tooting's high streets are to benefit from a new £5m fund.

At Wandsworth Council's Finance Resources and Climate Sustainability Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting last night it was confirmed that a £5m capital Town Centre Investment Fund has been created.

The fund will be used to take forward improvement schemes to town centres in the south of the borough.

The ambition is to make these spaces more attractive and easier to use.

It is hoped that this focus will bring about transformational change to the area through improvements that will address long standing issues and challenges.

Mitcham Road in Tooting was listed as an example by the council due to its issues with clutter, pedestrian flow and need for traffic calming.

It was proposed there is a need for a break out space and a pleasant space to linger at Amen Corner plus a refurbishment of Totterdown Street.

The council also said that what is key to initiatives such as the above is working in a close partnership with business and other stakeholders.

In order for these projects to be successful their support and active involvement will help create vibrant, convivial, clean and safe environments.

Cllr Rhodri Morgan, cabinet member for economic development, skills and employment said: "Wandsworth is setting up a £5m fund to bring about long-term improvements to our high streets and town centres in the south of the borough, including Tooting.

"We want to make these areas look better, fix long-standing problems such as clutter and make them easier to use for visitors and shoppers.

"This will bring benefits for local people as well as for the many shops, restaurants and other businesses in this busy and vibrant part of the borough."
