'One of my favourite things to do' - Organiser can't wait as Tooting Folk set for long-awaited return

By Tommy Joyce 26th Aug 2021

After around 18 months of no indoor Tooting Folk shows, it will be returning next week, much to the delight of one of the organisers.

Tooting Folk is a monthly folk night held at the Gorringe Park on the first Saturday of every month, with September 4 being its first indoor showing since March 2020.

The first featured act will be The Rigamarollers, featuring Ed Hopwood and Julian Marshall. The group play original and classic, ragtime, blues, jazz, jug band and fiddle tunes on harmonica, fiddle, guitars, mandolin and washboard.

As usual with Tooting Folk, there will be spaces for those who want to perform - you just need to make sure you are there slightly prior to the start so you can get your name on the list.

We spoke to one of the organisers, Alex MacDonald, and he told us that it has been a long time coming and that he can't wait for it to get going again.

He said: "It's great to be doing it again. The last live event was in March 2020 and we've done a combination of live and zoom events with a couple in the park - so it's great to be doing it again.

"It's one of my favourite things to do. We don't do it for money; we don't get anything out of it other than the fact we enjoy it and the principle of supporting folk music.

"It's not just exciting to see the night restarting, it's seeing live music in any context. It's been so long and so difficult to host live music, so it should be good."

Tooting Folk's return will be at 7.30pm from upstairs at the Gorringe Park pub, SW17 9JR.

Music will begin at 8, but if you want to perform on the night, it is recommended to arrive slightly prior to 7.30pm to get your name on the list.

Tickets cost £5 and you get them from the venue rather than online.
