A Tooting resident has raised nearly £800 for a mother and son who had been robbed.

Back in September, Daisy Marlowe was walking down Mitcham Road when she spotted a woman in tears just outside of Primark. She was with her son who is in a wheelchair and is an inpatient at St George's Hospital.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, had taken out £500 to buy her son some new clothes. Her bag was hanging from the handle of the wheelchair and somebody had stolen her purse with the money inside, causing her to break down in the middle of the street.

The next day Daisy called St George's Hospital and left her number in the hope that someone would ring back - and to her luck she did, where the two had another emotional conversation. Daisy was told that it had been reported to the police, before starting a fundraiser to try and help out this woman in any way she could.

The incident occurred on September 18 at around noon.

There have now been a total of 65 donations and the target of £500 has been smashed. There is currently £790 raised for this woman as of the time of writing (5.30pm on October 4).

Daisy explained how the whole thing came around.

She told Tooting Newsie: "While shopping in Tooting I noticed a woman crying outside Primark on Mitcham Road. She was all alone apart from a child in a wheelchair who also looked very upset.

"When I asked her if she was okay, she broke down saying that she had just been robbed. She had taken £500 out of her account to buy her son some new clothes. Her bag was hanging over the handles of the wheelchair and someone had pickpocketed her purse and took the whole £500.

"She had to take her distraught son back to St George's Hospital where he is an inpatient and then called the police who have said they are investigating, but there is pretty much no chance of her getting her money back.

"It was such an upsetting thing to see. I walked away from her feeling disgusted that someone could do this to anyone, let alone to an unwell child in a wheelchair. I decided to try and help, so I called around the children's wards at St George's and left my number in the hope that someone would know her and call me back.

"She returned my call later - I was so pleased to find her and offer her support in any way. It's been reported to the police and they're currently investigating.

"I've started a fundraiser, and am asking for donations - no matter how small - to help her get her £500 back.

"I'm so grateful to the community for contributing."

You can find the fundraising page on GoFundMe.

If you have any information about the incident, please contact the police on 101 and inform them.
