Watch the moment that Tooting's 'pocket park' opens for the first time

This is the moment that Tooting's latest park opened for the first time.

Situated on Mellison Road, this park has been years in the making and has been in construction since February.

As you can see from the video above, the Mayor of Wandsworth Richard Field proudly presented the new park, who described it as an area for people of all ages to enjoy "peace and tranquillity".

There can't have been many better days for it to open since they started building the park. Councillors, local residents and children queued up in the sunshine before the ribbon was cut by the Mayor who declared it open.

Sitting on the edge of Gravenel Gardens estate, it covers 240 square metres and replaces a fenced-off area that used to just be unkempt shrubbery a bit of land previously used as a car park.

On top of this, there is now a short stretch of Mellison Road which is now only one way and includes a cycle contraflow system to encourage more cycling.

The park itself features new trees, shrubs, bench seating, a picnic area, bike parking and plenty of play equipment for younger residents. This includes a climbing frame, play bridge, stepping logs and a rain garden. There is also soft surfacing, reducing the chance of injuries with any falls.

Councillor John Locker said: "This is a really welcome environmental initiative that has seen the removal of tarmac and its replacement with trees and shrubs. It is now the perfect spot for a new, welcoming and greener community space.

"It has the potential to be a wonderful little green oasis, providing local people with a place to relax and unwind and hold community events, while installing play equipment here is great news for young people and their parents and provides a real focal point for families in the area."

With another day of sweltering sun on the cards for tomorrow, why not go and check it out.
