Tooting: Snowden puts in strong performance in build up to Tokyo

By Tommy Joyce 16th Jul 2021

Local athlete Katie Snowden has put in a strong performance as she builds up to the Olympics.

The 27-year-old was recently announced as one of three 1500m runners to represent Team GB in Tokyo.

Running in the One Mile event in the Diamond League in Gateshead on Tuesday (July 13), Snowden managed to finish second - a good performance amongst some quality opposition.

Snowden completed the mile in 4:28:04 - her season's best for this distance. She finished above Winnie Nanyondo, the world number seven for 1500m, and narrowly behind Kate Grace, the world number 16 for 1500m.

This will no doubt be a confidence boost for the Balham-raised athlete, who was running in her final Diamond League event before she flies to Tokyo for the games (July 18).

Katie Snowden grew up in Balham and cut her teeth at the Tooting Bec Athletics Track while running for Herne Hill Harriers.

She still trains on the track to this day and supports the calls for the track to be resurfaced, as she recently mentioned in an interview with Nub News .

If you agree that Tooting Bec Athletics Track should be resurfaced, you can help support the cause by signing the petition. So far (as of July 15), it has 2145 electronic signatures.

Make sure you watch out for Katie this summer.

The Olympics begins on July 23, however, Katie's first race won't be until August 2 - so it's worth making a note of that in your diaries.
