Tooting REWIND: The history of Tooting Bec Station (Trinity Road Station)

By The Editor

23rd Apr 2021 | Local News

Tooting Bec Station, previously known as Trinity Road Station, was built in 1926.

The iconic station was designed by Charles Holden, a Bolton architect who was known for creating a number of underground stations and war memorials.

It was originally opened as part of the 'Morden Extension' which connected Clapham to Morden with seven new stations.

At the time of its creation, it was part of City and South London Railway, which was the first deep-level underground 'tube' railway in the world.

The station was renamed Tooting Bec Station in 1950.

The station is unique as it features 'UNDERGROUND' roundels on three panels surrounding the building.

It was usual for the 'Morden Extension' stations to have just one roundel situated in the centre panel.

The station features no 'main entrance' as both the east side and west side entrances lead to the main set of stairs.
