The outlines of bodies could be seen outside a series of stations in Tooting earlier this week - but why were they there?

Late on Monday (July 19) evening, the outlines of bodies were drawn with chalk outside a number of local tube stations, including Tooting Bec, Tooting Broadway and Balham alongside the message 'Wake Up Wandsworth'.

The message was from Extinction Rebellion Wandsworth, who were declaring the borough as 'an air pollution crime scene'.

XR Wandsworth was preparing for its 'March For Life', which is set to happen on Saturday July 24.

Starting from 11am at Balham's Hildreth Street Market, XR Wandsworth will march together towards Tooting Broadway to protest against Wandsworth Council's attempts to deal with air pollution.

The organisation has urged anyone who is concerned about air pollution to join them in its efforts.

On Saturday, many from XR Wandsworth will be dressed as pallbearers with while faces while carrying a double-lifesize coffin. This is in reference to the "300 Wandsworth residents who die prematurely each year because of air pollution".

When they reach Tooting Broadway, a "tree of life will emerge from the coffin", while people in the streets will be encouraged to write messages to Wandsworth Council on leaves that will be hung on the tree.
