Senior figures from around Tooting have paid their respect to MP Sir David Amess after he was tragically killed.

Sir David was attacked at his constituency surgery in a cold-hearted act that has shocked the nation.

The MP, who represented Southend West, was stabbed multiple times. A 25-year-old has since been arrested and held under the Terrorism Act.

Tooting's MP Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, Wandsworth Mayor Richard Field and the Wandsworth Council leader Ravi Govindia all paid tribute to the 69-year-old.

What Dr Rosena Allin-Khan has said

Dr Rosena expressed her sadness on Twitter, before asking for politics to be more "compassionate and caring."

She said: "Really saddened to hear that David Amess has passed away. It's absolutely heart breaking for his family, friends and staff - my thoughts and prayers are with them all.

"Also thinking of all those who will be triggered by the events. David was murdered while doing his job as an MP. We need our politics to be more compassionate and caring."

What the Wandsworth Mayor has said

On Saturday, Richard Field wrote to John Lamb, the chairman of the Southwend West Conservative Association, to express the borough's "deepest sympathy".

He wrote: "We were greatly shocked like so many to hear of the untimely and tragic news of the death of a great politician. Sir David was an exemplary example of what a politician should be and a shining beacon of good democracy at work, serving and representing all of the people in his constituency and in Parliament.

"We send our heartfelt condolences and our prayers to his family and your constituents at this sad and tragic time. May he rest in peace. He will not be forgotten."

What Ravi Govindia has said

The council's leader said that he was "horrified" by Friday's tragic events.

He said: "I am deeply saddened and horrified to hear of the death of David Amess MP. My most sincere condolences to David's family, friends and constituents. The attack on him today is an attack on democracy. We must never allow our freedoms and values to be imperilled by such evil deeds."
