Tooting REWIND: The time the Royal Family came to Sunnyhill Primary School

By The Editor

13th May 2021 | Local News

In 1945, Sunnyhill Primary School was visited by King George IV, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Magaret.

The royal family visited the school two days after VE Day.

One year before, during World War Two, the school was badly damaged by a V1 rocket.

The school was luckily empty at the time and no one was seriously injured.

Thousands of children lined the approach towards the school cheering as the Royal Family arrived on part of their tour through some of the worst bombed areas in London.

The Royals were greeted at the school gates by the Mayor of Wandsworth and local MP David Robinson.

They were introduced to a number of civil defence forces who had worked tirelessly throughout the war, especially through the blitz when 41 flying bombs fell on Streatham.

Thank you to The Streatham Society for providing the information and photos.
