Tooting Nub News has had a brilliant month since its launch and I'd like to thank you for all of your support so far.

I am extremely grateful to be able to write and tell the stories of this wonderful area.

Historic Tooting building to be constructed into a Lidl as well as hotel and housing

A new Tooting supermarket will be built on what the council calls 'one of Tooting's most prominent and historic landmark buildings'.

The now-vacant RACS building, Upper Tooting Road, was approved to be developed into new shops, restaurants and a 96 bedroom hotel back in 2018.

The development is also planned to provide 41 residential units including affordable homes for local people on lower incomes.

It has now been confirmed to residents that a larger Lidl supermarket will be opened within the development to replace the existing store on the same road.

Tooting residents divided over planned five storey flat, gym and restaurant development

Residents are divided over the development of a five-storey flat, restaurant and gym complex on Upper Tooting Road next to King's Head pub.

Prime Homes (SW London) put forward the application to demolish the existing site's buildings for the large development back in July 2019.

Some residents have called the development 'un-neighbourly' to the area and some surrounding neighbours have shared concerns that it will decrease natural daylight to their homes.

Nightingale Police reveal number of thefts this month as they hold extra patrols

Nightingale Ward Police have revealed the number of burglaries this month to Nub News and issued advice to residents to keep their belongings safe.

A spokesperson for Nightingale Police told Nub News that there have been four thefts in the area since the beginning of the month.

Two of the burglaries occurred were from a bike storage area which was located inside the buildings complex.

Tooting Common awarded Green Flag status

Tooting Common, Wandsworth Common and King George's Park have been awarded Green Flag status.

The Green Flag Award is an international mark of quality and recognised standard for well-managed parks and green spaces all over the world. Its winners are committed to making the parks the best they can for their community.

Following an annual inspection, Battersea Park and Wandsworth Park have also retained their Green Flags.

9,000 re-useable face coverings donated to St George's Hospital staff

St George's Hospital staff members have been gifted 9,000 re-useable face coverings in partnership with the personalised photo gifting company Photobox and St George's Hospital Charity.

The face coverings – branded with the St George's Hospital Charity colours – will help staff protect themselves and others while outside the hospital, such as when travelling to and from work.

The face coverings for staff have been 100% funded by Photobox following an inquiry from Rosie Taylor-Davies, founder of The Scrubbery, the local scrubs sewing initiative in South West London, together with her husband Christo who works for Photobox.

Wandsworth Council says Tooting's most vulnerable children won't go hungry, some residents say more could be done

Councillors have approved a £10,000 food voucher scheme to help hard-pressed and vulnerable families in the borough cover the cost of meals during the school holiday.

This latest support mirrors a scheme launched by the council in May which provided 20,000 supermarket food vouchers to ensure children eligible for free school meals didn't go hungry during the lockdown.

This comes following Marcus Rashford's call for an extension of free school meals to include half-term and Christmas was rejected by the government.

Many residents have been praising Wandsworth Council's scheme, while some believe there is more that could be done.

Tooting's Meat and Shake to offer free school lunches during half term

Meat and Shake in Tooting is giving away free school lunches throughout all of the half term.

Owner Usama Siddique told Nub News that he wanted to give back to the community as much as he possibly could.

The popular Upper Tooting Road restaurant will offer free meals to anyone who asks for them from 12pm - 5pm starting from Monday.

Many eateries around the country have offered their services after Marcus Rashford's call for an extension of free school meals to include half term and Christmas was rejected by the government.

Tooting's Bordelaise is offering free steak, fish and pasta school lunches over half term

Bordelaise, a popular French restaurant in Tooting Broadway Market, will be offering free school lunches throughout half term.

This comes following a number of Tooting eateries vowed to help the community by offering schoolchildren meals for free.

Businesses have followed suit after Marcus Rashford's call for an extension of free school meals to include half term and Christmas was rejected by the government.

Bordelaise will be offering steak, fish, and pasta options with a side of fries, green beans, and salad - all served with an ice-cream dessert.
