Tooting Library will be dishing out Wandsworth Council recycling sacks from tomorrow

Five libraries in Wandsworth will be giving out recycling sacks from tomorrow onwards - and Tooting Library is one of them.

Recycling sacks have been hard to come by in months gone by in Wandsworth Borough. As we have reported previously, some people had asked up to five times for sacks without reply and recently the council announced that any clear sack would be suitable to use for recycling.

But now from tomorrow (September 22), libraries from Tooting, Balham, Battersea, Putney and Southfields will have sacks available to pick up from.

The council's Customer Service Centre at the town hall on Wandsworth High Street will also have some in supply.

The public has been asked to take what they really need to make sure that their neighbours are not left without.

As previously mentioned, if you have sacks that are clear but are not issued by the council, they will be taken for recycling.

Furthermore, bulky cardboard no longer has to be placed within the sack to be collected. So long as the cardboard is flat, dry and neatly stacked it will be collected.

The council says that recycling sacks issues have come around following an increase of waste during the pandemic, as well as staff shortages caused by Covid-19 infections.

Environment spokesman Councillor Steffi Sutters said: "We know that many of our residents are really dedicated to recycling so it's our job to give them tools to support that.

"Making sacks available for collection at libraries, and also from the town hall, is a simple and straightforward measure that will help achieve this. Most of these libraries are located in main town centres so should be easy and convenient for residents to get to.

"All we would ask is that residents who collect sacks take only what they need. It would be a real drawback if people take away huge numbers of sacks and leave none for their neighbours.

"We will of course ensure that stocks are regularly replenished, but we would appeal to people to take only what they realistically need."
