The former Tooting Police Station on Mitcham Road has been awarded statutory Grade II Listing.

Historic England awarded the iconic building Grade II status after local organisation 'Tooting History Group' submitted an application.

The building has been listed for its 'architectural interest' and 'historic interest'.

The news of the listing has been met with widespread positivity from local residents.

One resident exclaimed: "A wonderful part of our Local Tooting history."

Libby Lawson, a member of Tooting History Group, said: "I applied to Historic England submitting photographs, history, architectural description etc, they assessed the building, requested representations from Council; Conservation officers, amenity groups-including Tooting History Group, recommended it to the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport who considered it and approved the recommendation."

A property company recently acquired the former Police Station and Section House for £8.25M.

Commenting on the acquisition, Duncan Brisbane, Development Director at Telereal Trillium, said:

"This is an exciting opportunity for us to deliver a landmark scheme in the heart of one of south London's most popular areas. Traditionally, Telereal Trillium has concentrated on development opportunities within our own portfolio."

Staff moved out of the Police Station in October last year as part of the 'Met's Estate Transformation programme'.

The program aims to invest in modern buildings and 'support new ways to accommodate the force'.

A Wandsworth Police previously said that the building 'fails to provide a modern policing facility that is fit for the 21st century'.
